NZ well into one of the strongest El Niños on record

For an El Niño to be officially declared, equator ocean temperatures must be between 0.5-0.7 degrees warmer than usual for three months.

The El Niño weather pattern New Zealand is currently experiencing is one of the strongest on record and will probably result in a very dry summer.

El Niño is the name given to changes in the patterns of winds across the Pacific Ocean that warm sea temperatures, causing weather changes.
