It appears National Party deputy leader Bill English has the numbers to replace outgoing prime minister John Key.

Reports emerged overnight that, in a caucus of 59, Mr English has 45 votes, putting him well in front of the other leadership contenders, Jonathan Coleman and Judith Collins.
