McCAW, Phil

As the founding partner of technology investors Movac, Phil McCaw has led the growth of over 20 companies.

Movac’s most recent foray is in Mobi2Go, a leader in digital ordering and engagement solutions for hospitality.

McCaw was one of the initial investors in Trade Me, which netted him $73 million. That turned into Movac, of which he owns 18%.

The company has invested more than $55 million in about 25 companies, including wireless tech company PowerbyProxi, fundraising website Givealittle, beauty appointment booking service Flossie.com, appointment-booking software startup Timely and flight recovery drink maker 1Above.

In 2017, Movac reaped tens of millions of dollars as a 20% shareholder in PowerbyProxi when it was sold to Apple for more than $100m.

Outside of Movac, McCaw remains an active angel investor and maintains a personal angel investment portfolio. He is a strong advocate for the development of the entrepreneurial and early stage investment eco-system in New Zealand and is the past chair of the Angel Association of New Zealand; a founding investor in the Lightning Lab technology accelerator; and a founding investor in the Kiwi Landing Pad in San Francisco.
