Is growing a billion trees a good thing for the country?

Hidesight: The government doesn't yet have a budget for its massive tree planting plans.

The government has committed our money to re-establishing the New Zealand Forest Service and planting a billion trees over the next 10 years. It’s not clear why. 

It seems simply that growing trees is a Good Thing, much better than growing, say, grass or scrub.
