A study of the accounts of 130 of the world’s airlines shows half collected a total of $US38.1 billion in extra charges for baggage, seat bookings and the like.

Low-cost airlines such as Jetstar make this “ancillary revenue” a key part of their business model, as it allows fares to be advertised
