Two surprises are seen in the first polls that follow the ascension of Jacinda Ardern to leadership of the Labour Party.

The first is not that Labour has seen a jump – up nine points in the Newshub/Reid poll, to 33.1%, and up from 23% to 36% in a UMR poll leaked to the New Zealand Herald.
