Capital Letter: Compensating for injustice

Given the heat generated by the cabinet's decision, ministers could be forgiven for wanting to divest themselves of such decisions.

New Zealand does not offer a legal right to compensation for wrongful conviction or imprisonment. Compensation payments are made on an ex gratia (voluntary) basis under cabinet guidelines adopted in 1998 for determining eligibility for and the amount of any payment.
