The action remains interesting in the world's most developed smartphone market, the US - perhaps showing what's to come in New Zealand has Vodafone and Telecom broth ramp up their promotion of Google Android phones.
The latest Nielsen figures show that in January, phones based on Google's Android software (made by HTC, LG, Motorola Samsung, Sony-Ericsson and others) accounted for 14% of new phone sales at the start of this year (see chart above).
By August, Android had shot to number one, with 32% market share.
Mobiles devices running Apple's iOS4 software (for the purposes of this survey, iPhone) are number two, having made something of a comeback since the mid-year release of the iPhone 4; those running RIM's BlackBerry OS (that is, BlackBerries) are at number three.
The results are similar to those in recent surveys by Canalys and NDP.
