UPDATE 3pm: Telecom said the calling problem has now been resolved. It was caused by a software fault, but the network remains under close monitoring.
UPDATE 1.15pm: Telecom has just issued the following update:
"Some customers are experiencing intermittent congestion issues when making calls in some parts of the North Island.
"Data and text messages (SMS) are working as normal.
"If customers experience issues when making important calls, we recommend they use a landline."
11.30am: Some Telecom XT customers have had trouble making or receiving calls on their mobiles this morning.
On Geekzone, one user said problems started at 7.30am this morning, adding that they "Couldn't make or receive calls until about 10am this morning."
Just after midday, Telecom spokeswoman Katherine Murphy told NBR that "There is degradation of mobile voice services. SMS and data are working as normal."
(However, NBR's usually reliable XT Turbo stick has been dropping its connection from time to time this morning.)
The company was still working to restore the service, Ms Murphy said. However, so far there is no estimated time to fix the problem.
Telecom community manager Richard Irvine told NBR the problems were "predominantly in the North Island."
The XT network, built by Alcatel-Lucent, has been largely problem-free since its rocky launch.
