Independent tester Truenet has found Telecom's 3G mobile network fastest in most areas of central Auckland, and the best peforming at a number of tasks.
XT achieved the highest average speed and the was the best performer at a majority of locations tested (see graphic below). The results mirror NBR's anecdotal experience.
Second place was 2degrees. Although it doesn't support HSPA+ (the fastest 3G technology, now on Telecom and Vodafone's networks), it perhaps benefits from a relatively modest number of data users.
Using a single router board with equipped with a HSPA+-capable modem and SIM card for each network, a TrueNet vehicle tested each network simultaneously in a number of central city locations. Methodology developed by OfCom (in broad terms, the UK equivalent of the NZ Commerce Commission's Telecommunications Commissioner) was employed for the the tests.
The measurements were carried out in late June.
Truenet is a fully-owned subsidiary of Wellington-based IT services and web development company Catalyst.
The company recently measured mobile broadband in the capital, with similar results.
