More than eight million online purchases have been processed through Xbox Live across New Zealand and Australia over the past calendar year, the company announced yesterday.

This figure has increased by more than 70% on the previous year’s result of 4.8 million online sales.

Subscribers in Australasia grew by more than 50% year-on-year, with more than 450,000 shoppers now registered across the two countries.

Last year, Xbox Live customers in Australasia spent more than 136 million hours on the site, which was a year-on-year increase of more than 36%.

Microsoft New Zealand business director Fraser Scott said the launch of the site’s movie on demand service in November (which offers high definition movies streamed directly to TV) has been successful with customers. More than 100,000 customers accessed the service during the first eight weeks.

In 2009, the company experienced revenue growth of more than 13% year-on-year, as well as increased console sales of 12% (year-on-year).

Mr Scott said; “We have invested significantly in building our local Xbox Live community and the ANZ market now supports one of the biggest Live communities anywhere in the world.”
