UPDATE: Westpac's internet banking was back online Saturday morning.
Westpac's online banking service has been offline for much of the day, and the bank still has no idea when it will come back online.
A message on the bank's website at around 1.45pm and still on the site at 4pm, read: "We apologise for the inconvenience but the Westpac Online Banking service is temporarily unavailable. We are currently working to fix this issue as soon as possible."
One customer, John-Daniel Trask, told NBR he had had problems accessing the site since 9.30am. "It's been on and off since this morning," Mr Trask said.
Another, Tessa Slade, said she had been unable to access Westpac online banking since around 1pm.
At 4.45pm, Westpac spokesman Chris Mirams told NBR the bank's internet banking system had been completely offline for around two hours. Earlier, there had been intermittment issues.
Both web banking and mobile banking services were offline.
The bank had no estimated time for getting its system back online.
Mr Mirams said a "hardware disk issue" had caused the problems.
Asked if this meant a storage or network storage-related issue had taken Wespac's online banking offline, Mr Mirams said he did not have further information.
Mr Mirams said eftpos, credit card and ATM services were functioning as usual.
