Mediaworks will be aiming both barrels at TVNZ next year by scrapping its youth and music C4 channel in favour of a new mainstream channel, Four.
At the same time, TV3’s target age group is being lifted to 25-54 years in bid take more mature audiences from TVNZ.
Viewers will notice some big changes, such as all children’s programming and some top shows (The Simpsons, America’s Top Model, Top Chef) moving from TV3 to Four, which will target 18-49 year-olds, the same as TV3 now.
Among programmes unveiled at today’s 2011 season launch is a successor to local drama hit Outrageous Fortune, which is now in its final season. The Almighty Johnsons also comes from the South Pacific Pictures stable and has the same creative team as Outrageous Fortune.
The launch audience was told Four would be devoid of news and information shows – “just pure escapism.” No new TV3 news and current affairs shows were announced, though news director Mark Jennings said weekend current affairs show The Nation would continue next year.
However, TV3 will retain its share of big-bang blockbusters, such as the new Hawaii Five-O and conspiracy drama series The Event, and crime shows, programmer Kelly Martin says.
Four’s new shows include a trio of hit US shows: Outsourced, Mixed Signals and Covert Affairs, as well as Fox TV’s The Gates, a riposte to vampire show True Blood.
Advertisers will be offered “cross platform” packages over both channels as well as radio and online.
