UPDATE: In an 11am update, Vodafone says it has restored a mobile broadband glitch that hit around 20% of its customers. The company says it has also fixed landline problems that began around the same time.
What went wrong between around 4am and 11am?
"The issue related to a fault within one of our domain name servers (DNS) — which is a part of our network that connects customer traffic to external data networks. Only some customers were impacted [around one in five], specifically those who were connected to this DNS," a spokeswoman says.
EARLIER: Vodafone customers were hit by scattered outages around the country from 4am this morning.
The carrier says fixed broadband service has now been restored, but problems with mobile broadband connections continue.
The company could not immediately tell NBR how many fixed-line customers were affected, or where they were beyond "various locations across New Zealand".
Around 20% of mobile customers are affected, a spokeswoman says.
On social media, Vodafone customers in centres including Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Palmerston North took to social media to complain about outages this morning — although some in the same locations reported no issues, or only problems with certain websites.
Vodafone says it will update again at 11am. It has yet to offer any detail on the cause of the glitch.
