US primaries: Trumps wins three states, misses Ohio; Missouri undecided

Missouri remains undecided with too-close-to-call results for both parties after yesterday's primaries.

• Kasich wins Ohio

• Trump wins Illinois, North Carolina, Florida; Rubio suspends campaign

• Clinton wins Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and Florida

Republican front-runner Donald Trump has a tighter grip over the presidential nomination after yesterday's primaries but was denied a clean sweep of five states.

Ohio governor John Kasich won his home state, which is enough to keep him the contest and the hope a final decision may be decided at the Republican convention.

But Mr Trump has comfortably won in Florida, Illinois and North Carolina.

In the Democratic contest, Hillary Clinton easily took three states and only just beat Bernie Sanders in Illinois.

Missouri has produced a cliffhanger for both parties, with counting uncompleted.

Mrs Clinton is just ahead of Mr Sanders, while Mr Trump is also just in front of Ted Cruz with margins of less than a percentage point.

Though he didn't win a primary, Mr Cruz has done well enough in at least three states to stay in contention.

The single victim was Florida's Marco Rubio, who has pulled out of the campaign after failing to carry his home state.

Results:

Florida (declared)
Republicans: Home state Senator Marco Rubio (27.5%) conceded victory to Mr Trump (45.5%). Mr Rubio has also ended his campaign. Mr Cruz was third (17.1%).

Democrats: Hillary Clinton (64.8%) also scores an easy win over Bernie Sanders (33.0%).

Illinois (declared)
Republicans: Strong campaigning by Texas Senator Ted Cruz (30.6%) was not enough to dislodge Mr Trump (38.9%). Mr Kasich was third (19.7%)

Democrats: Mr Sanders (48.7%) was close to upsetting Mrs Clinton (50.4%).

Missouri (counting)
Republicans: Mr Trump (40.9%) is holding off a strong challenge from Mr Cruz (40.7%). Mr Kasich has 9.9%.

Democrats: Mrs Clinton (49.6%) is just in front of Mr Sanders (49.4%).

North Carolina (declared)
Republicans: Mr Trump (40.3%) won by a narrow margin by Mr Cruz (36.3%). Mr Kasich was third (12.6%).

Democrats: Mrs Clinton (54.8%) was the clear winner over Mr Sanders (40.5%).

Ohio (declared)
Republicans: Mr Kasich (44.2%) held a sufficient lead over Mr Trump (32.2%) to deny him a clean slate win.

Democrats: Mrs Clinton (62.9%) finished well in front of Mr Sanders (35.9%), who was hoping to repeat last week’s upset victory in neighbouring Michigan.
