UPDATED: It’s over! Union, Ports of Auckland end years-long dispute
The agreement ending the long-running, rancorous stand-off will be signed off today.
UPDATE: As expected, Maritime Union members have ratified a collective employment agreement with Ports of Auckland.
A stop-work meeting of members unanimously voted in favour of the new collective employment agreement first thing this morning.
Maritime Union National President Garry Parsloe says the new agreement is a positive step for workers at the Ports of Auckland that should ensure the continued success of the port.
Ports of Auckland chief executive Tony Gibson concurs.
“We are obviously pleased and look forward to working with the Maritime Union to deliver even more for the people of Auckland,” he says.
The agreement between the port company and the union will be signed off today.
EARLIER: The Maritime Union of New Zealand’s Auckland chapter is holding a meeting to ratify a collective agreement with Ports of Auckland that – if passed – will finally bring to an end the industrial dispute between the two organisations that began in late 2011.
Port company and union sources both expect the meeting – due to end around 9am – to agree to the terms of the collective contract.
As one union source told NBR, “We wouldn’t be holding the meeting if we didn’t think we could get it over the line.”
Sources from both sides of the dispute credit the recent involvement of Maritime Union national secretary Joe Fleetwood as being crucial to getting discussions to this stage.
