Underarm smell lingers

Today is the 32nd anniversary of Trevor Chappell's infamous under-arm delivery.

It won't do your blood pressure any good to relive the final over of New Zealand's most notorious one-dayer. But go on, click on the clip below.

Most with only a passing knowledge of the game know the headline story: with NZ needing a six to win off the last ball at the MCG in 1981, Geoff Chappell instructed brother Trevor to bowl the last ball under-arm.

But as the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's NZ History site tartly notes, "The underarm delivery diverted attention from the real turning point of the match, which also involved Greg Chappell. With his score on 52, he was caught in the outfield by Martin Snedden. Chappell refused to accept Snedden’s word and the umpires disallowed the catch."
