Social networking site Twitter experienced phenomenal growth in 2009 ending the year with more than 75 million users, the company revealed.
The monthly rate of new user accounts peaked in July. Around 6.2 million users are on average signing up each month, meaning every two to three seconds a new account is created.
But a large number of Twitter accounts are inactive, with about 25% of accounts having no followers and about 40% of accounts never having sent a tweet. About 80% of Twitter users have tweeted fewer than 10 times.
Twitter grew the most of any social networking site after surging more than 2800% in 2009, according to Opera’s state of the web report.
But Twitter wasn’t the only site that experienced growth; Facebook grew up more than 600% and now has more than 350 million users worldwide.
Yesterday, NBR reported the increase in social networking sites had also increased the amount of spam. A report from Cisco showed these sites were being heavily targeted because of the relaxed manner in which users published personal information.
