Trains, ferries running in Wellington but KiwiRail faces significant issues in South Island

"It's been an extremely challenging and volatile environment"

KiwiRail says all Wellington passenger services are running today following yesterday's 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Kaikoura, while there is still "an enormous amount of work to do" in the South Island.

Repairs to the network were tested overnight, and the TranzAlpine, Northern Explorer and Capital Connection services are all operating today, the state-owned company said in a statement. Wellington Railway Station has been cleared to re-open, and all freight lines in the North Island are open and operating today.

There is significant damage to the Main North Line between Picton and Christchurch, particularly around Kaikoura, which is near the epicentre of yesterday's shake. KiwiRail said early reports indicate this line may be closed for some time. The earthquake has cut off Kaikoura, with extensive damage to State Highway 1 in the South Island, left thousands of households without power and water, and killed two people.

"It's been an extremely challenging and volatile environment where the lines have had to be checked and then rechecked again following more aftershocks," chief executive Peter Reidy said. "Our task now is to work with our partners to tackle the significant transport issues in the South Island."

The Kaiarahi and Kaitaki ferries are scheduled to sail between Wellington and Picton today, carrying freight and vehicle passengers only, with foot traffic passengers suspended due to terminal damage. The Aratere ferry will remain anchored in Wellington Harbour until a berth becomes available.
