Top economist Dr Girol Karacaoglu has been appointed head of New Zealand’s only School of Government at Victoria University of Wellington.
Dr Karacaoglu comes to Victoria from the New Zealand Treasury where, over the past four years, he has held the positions of chief economist and deputy secretary – macroeconomics and international economic research. In these roles, he oversaw research and advice on economic policy issues that aimed to improve the standard of living for New Zealanders.
Victoria University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford is delighted with the appointment and says Dr Karacaoglu will make a significant contribution to the work of the School of Government.
“Dr Karacaoglu brings extensive experience in the public and private sectors. His deep knowledge and innovative scholarship will be of great value and we look forward to him further strengthening the School’s important work in advancing better government.
“The School of Government is the only one of its kind in the country. The work we do, both from the University’s Pipitea campus near Parliament and our premises in downtown Auckland, plays an important role in the functioning of government in New Zealand and overseas.
“Through its teaching programmes, research and collaborations with other universities and governments, the School helps to build public sector capability, contributes to public policy scholarship and improves public sector governance.
“I know that as Head of School, Dr Karacaoglu will provide strong leadership and direction.”
Dr Karacaoglu says he is “happy and honoured” to take up the position.
“I strongly support the mission statement of the School of Government, to assist in seeking solutions to major public policy and management challenges through an interdisciplinary teaching and research programme.
“I am looking forward to building on existing strong foundations and what has already been achieved.”
Earlier roles held by Dr Karacaoglu include chief executive at The Co-operative Bank, general manager at Westpac New Zealand, chief economist at the National Bank of New Zealand and senior lecturer in economics at Victoria University.
Dr Karacaoglu will begin his new role on 3 October, taking over from Professor Brad Jackson who steps down from the position when his term ends. Professor Jackson will resume his role at the School as Professor of Public and Community Leadership.
