TomTom adds live traffic updates to iPhone app
Another nail in the coffin of standalone GPS units.
Another nail in the coffin of standalone GPS units.
TomTom has added real-time traffic flow updates (dubbed "HD Traffic") to its iPhone app.
Previously, the feature has only been available for TomTom's standalone sat-nav units.
The addition of real-time traffic to TomTom's iPhone app is another nail in the coffin for traditional GPS units, but also gives TomTom an edge (for now) over dedicated smartphone rivals from Navigon to the turn-by-turn navigation offered by the latest Google Android-based smartphones.
The bad news: HD Traffic has been added as an "in app purchase", costing TomTom iPhone app owners $9.95 a month or $49.95 a year.
TomTom (like Navman) draws its real-time traffic data from the AA's GeoSmart division, which taps the police, councils, data from its own vehicles and other sources for traffic flow and traffic incident data.
