LATEST: The first details of Twyford's announcement are now available. Read them here.
EARLIER: Housing Minister Phil Twyford and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern are making a major announcement at Unitec today.
It's widely tipped to involve a plan to build around 4000 homes on land currently occupied by the polytech, which is situated in the central-west Auckland suburb of Mt Albert.
Plans already published on Unitec's website include a proposal to shrink its campus, which covers more than 53 hectares and is occupied by 177 buildings, down to nine hectares.
Labour campaigned on the promise to build 100,000 affordable homes, but so far details around the cost and logistics of the policy have been scant.
NBR political reporter Brent Edwards will have analysis after the Unitech announcement.
