The Shape of Water, a fantasy romance between a mute woman and an amphibious creature, has 13 nominations including best picture in this year’s Hollywood Oscars.

Its female star, Sally Hawkins, is among the best actress contenders while its Spanish director, Guillermo del Toro, is also in contention.

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, released in July, has eight nominations, including best picture and director, while crime thriller Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has seven.

In a first, cinematography Rachel Morrison is the first woman to be nominated in her profession for the Netflix production Mudbound.

Greta Gerwig, director of Lady Bird, breaks a seven-year drought since a woman was nominated in that category.

Notably absent from the list of nominees is James Franco, the star and director of The Disaster Artist, who has been accused of sexual misconduct in the wake of his Golden Globe win.

The Disaster Artist, based on the story of the world’s worst film-maker, scored just one Oscar nomination, for adapted screenplay.

In other nominations, best-actor contenders include Gary Oldman, for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, Timothée Chalamet as a teenager in Call Me by My Name and Phantom Thread lead Daniel Day-Lewis, playing a 1950s London high-fashion designer.

Frances McDormand is also in the race for best actress for her role in Three Billboards, for which she has already won a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.

The sole New Zealand-connected nomination is Weta’s visual effects work on War for the Planet of the Apes.

The Oscars will be presented on March 5 (NZ time).
