More teens listen to music through YouTube than through any other source, according to a data just released by Nielsen.

A Music 360 survey of 3000 in the US found:

  • 64% of teens listen to music through YouTube
  • 56% of teens listen to music on the radio
  • 53% of teens listen to music through iTunes
  • 50% of teens listen to music on CD (Wot? Teens buy discs shocker? - Editor)

All YouTube content is free, but the Google-owned video-sharing site gives artists and rights holders a cut of ad revenue.

Many stars, like Katy Perry (pictured) now have their own YouTube channel.

The same survey found radio (albeit sometimes accessed these days via PC or smartphone radio app) was still the dominant way people discover new music:

  • 48% discover music most often through the radio
  • 10% discover music most often through friends/relatives
  • 7% discover music most often through YouTube

Nielsen says digital downloads will represent 57.7% of all music sales by the end of this year, up from 53% in the first half of 2011.

A recent PwC survey of the New Zealand music market said digital sales (rising from $27 million to $35 million) would eclipse CD sales (falling from $34 million to $27 million) next year with the total market growing.
