SUBSCRIBER-ONLY POLL RESULT: Is Uber's arrival a positive or negative for NZ passengers?
It's a landslide outcome.
It's a landslide outcome.
The vast majority of participating NBR member subscribers view the entry of Uber into the NZ market as a positive for local passengers.
Uber drivers, who use the Uber app to connect them passengers with in their city via smartphone, have been reportedly been targeted by NZ police during the holiday season for allegedly operating illegally.
According to Ian Apperley, the root of the crackdown is that "the powerful Taxi Federation has engaged in an unrelenting campaign to see them shutdown and now the police are in on the act, fining drivers because a smartphone apparently doesn’t constitute a smart meter".
This has proven to be a hot button issue among NBR readers, with the comments section in Mr Apperley’s pro-Uber opinion piece running hot since the story was posted on Monday, with opinions regarding the innovative service ranging from supportive to sceptical.
When put to the vote, however, a whopping 91% of NBR subscribers welcome Uber’s arrival in NZ, with just 9% believing Kiwi passengers won’t be better off as a result.
