The government and ratepayers could face a bill of $50-$100 million if the next America’s Cup in 2017 is held in Auckland.
Waterfront Auckland chairman Sir Bob Harvey, speaking on Radio Live, says a major village will be needed to handle the large yachts and up to three challenger teams, possibly from Australia and Switzerland as well as the US.
Sir Bob admits the figures are off the top of his head but he says the Auckland Council is “more than ready and able to go.”
The bulk of the money would have to come from taxpayers through the government and Auckland Council ratepayers
He says the sites are available at the western end of the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter, where the council is developing large areas of undeveloped land.
“We really want to do it [stage the Cup] – it inspires us,” he says, referring to the country’s pride if Emirates Team New Zealand succeeds in recapturing the Auld Mug.
New Zealand is leading the first-to-nine races by three winning points to Oracle's minus one point after four races, including a two-point penalty before the series started on Sunday.
