Auckland Council has approved retail giant Westfield’s proposed expansion of St Lukes that will see the mall double in size.

It wants to expand from 46,832sq m to 92,500sq m.

The mall, last renovated in 2004, now has 191 retailers. The planning expansion includes a landscaped strip along the road boundary with trees and scrubs, and 30% of the upper levels being balconies and glazing.

However the proposal has a long way to go before construction can start.

The plan change will be open to public submission in April and a two week hearing will be held in June were locals residents and others concerned can share their views with independent Council commissioners.

“The plan change is merely a very first step in future planning for the use of Westfield’s landholdings at St Lukes,” Westfield director Jason Lynch said.

“At this stage there is no time frame for the commencement of any development works at the centre. Any future development at the centre will require Resource Consent for any specific plans.”
