"Anyone know what's going on?" tweeted Auckland Mayor Phil Goff this afternoon as he spied smoke billowing from the top of the 21-story building at 396 Queen St in the CBD (prompting one wag to reply "Phil us with confidence ;)."
The building is being renovated for the opening of the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, scheduled to open November 1, 2017.
The Fire Service was called before 3pm and shortly after there were about 60 fire fighters and 13 fire appliances on the scene.
The fire was doused by 3.45pm. There were no reports of injuries. The building is not occupied during its renovation.
Firefighters reportedly located the fire on the roof of the building, which was coming from a large metal box.
Auckland man Chris Keall, who was in a room on the 17th floor of the nearby Sky City Grand Hotel when the fire hit, says it appeared like it could have been an air conditioning unit.
