Sky TV expands Disney deal, bags exclusive movie rights for Neon
Neflix said it would grab more and more local rights. But the narrative is not playing out that way.

So much for Netflix snaffling up content rights.
Sky TV says it's just signed a "multi-year", expanded deal with Disney.
The new contract gives Sky and its new streaming video on-demand service, Neon, exclusive NZ rights to upcoming films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm, including Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Cinderella, Inside Out, Big Hero 6, Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Neon will also add more recent Disney titles from June.
As part of the expanded deal, Sky will launch a new family movie channel – SKY Movies Disney – on July 1. SKY Movies Disney will be available as part of the Movie Tier and screen Disney’s family movies in HD. It will join three Disney channels already available on Sky: Disney Junior, Disney Channel and the recently launched Disney XD – available to all SKY’s domestic customers as part of their basic package.
Shortly before Netflix launched, Sky inked a new multi-year deal with HBO, which also covered both broadcast and internet rights.
Sky is holding the line. The question for shareholders – which might not be answered until its half-year result – is: At what cost?
