Despite a slight rise in unemployment in the previous quarter, employment website Seek says the number of new jobs being posted online is growing.

Unemployment rose 0.1% to 6.8% in the June quarter despite a fall anticipated by forecasters.

Seek says the number of new jobs advertised on its website has grown 6.5% year-on-year.

In August, job numbers increased 2.8% compared to the previous month.

The rise was led by strong demand for carpenters in Canterbury, general manager Janet Faulding says.

"This past month has shown a gradual firming of the employment market in New Zealand, with more jobs advertised than applications received.

"Trades and services roles in Canterbury, of course, continue to see rapid growth, which is bolstering the results shown in the region."

The Seek employment index, which is the ratio of new jobs to the number of applications received, rose 6.8% in Auckland, 3.6% in Wellington, and 8.4% in Canterbury.

The largest increases by job-type was carpenters, up 178%, marketing brand managers, up 74%, and IT security jobs, up 70%.
