Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade minister Murray McCully recently renewed his commitment to use New Zealand’s time at the UN Security Council constructively and restart the stalled Middle East Peace process.
The discussion, between Israel and the Palestinian territories, has eaten the time and patience of US presidents and world officials for decades but with little progress. Washington Institute for Near East Policy adjunct fellow Einat Wilf says New Zealand should think about concentrating on more achievable security goals.
Dr Wilf is sceptical that the attempt will drive the talks forward and explains that, while some agreement needs eventually to be found, Israel and the Palestinian territories are quite capable of having that discussion themselves. Indeed, the inclusion of foreign interests in the talks is a large reason for the impasse.
