Samsung releases smartwatch that can work without a Samsung smartphone

Gear S2 also features rotating bezel.

Fri, 04 Sep 2015

Samsung has used the IFA show in Berlin to preview its latest smartwatch, the Gear S2.

The S2 is notable for three things.

1. It's the first Samsung smartwatch that can peer with a brand of Android smartphone; you won't need a Samsung handset in your pocket.

2. Its rotating bezel (see the video below).

3. It runs on the Tizen operating system (a Linux-based platform also backed by Intel and others) rather than Android Wear. Samsung says 1000 Tizen apps will be ready once the Gear S2 hits the market. They will include Samsung's own Health app plus Nike+ for running.

The Gear S2 will be available in a dark gray case with a dark gray band and silver case with a white band. The Samsung Gear S2 classic will be available in a black case with a leather band.

Samsung claims the battery will last two to three days.

Both models feature a 1.2-inch circular screen with 360 x 360 resolution (302 ppi), a 1GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of onboard storage, 513MB of RAM, wi-fi, Bluetooth and NFC.

And both models are 11.4mm deep, or slightly thicker than Apple's Watch 10.5mm).

Samsung has yet to detail pricing or a release date.
