How big can it go?

Samsung has already released some super-size Android smartphones, including the Galaxy Note II with a 5.5-inch display, and its Galaxy S 4 (hitting NZ at the end of this month) with a 5-inch display.

Now the Korean company has previewed the Galaxy Mega, which will come in 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch versions.

Some media are styling the Mega as the company's latest "phablet" or tableet-phone hybrid.

But given the Mega has the standard Android smartphone home screen, and is sold with a SIM card (there's no wi-fi only option), most would call it a phone. A very big phone.

The 199g Mega measures 167.6 x 88 x 8mm.

Other tech specs across both models include support for 4G/LTE, a 720p HD display, Android 4.2 (aka Jellybean), 8GB or 16GB internal storage, an 8 megapixel rear camera/1 megapixel front, wi-fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, 1.5GB of RAM and a dualcore 1.75-inch Snapdragon processor.

Ubergizmo, one of the few sites to get an early look, says the Mega, can still fit inside a pants pocket, and can be held in one hand.

Its impressed overall, but does say the large display would have been better off with a full HD (1080p) screen.

The Mega has some of the features from the Galaxy S 4, including real-time language translation and the ability to capture audio with videos - but not the S 4's signature air gestures or ability to freeze a video if you look away.

It will be available in Europe from May. There's no immediate word on release dates for NZ and other countries.

No pricing has been offered so far.
