Robin Judkins still plans to be at the finish line of the Speight's Coast to Coast event he has just sold NBR Rich Listers.
The familiar bearded, chuckling, teetotalling Mr Judkins will still hand out cans of Speights to contestants as they complete the race after starting on the West Coast and ending at Sumner Beach – 243km.
The gruelling three-day affair involving running, cycling and kayaking has been modified in recent years to allow for one-day events as part of the overall race.
But after 30 years, Mr Judkins is handing over the event to Queenstown-based Trojan Holdings, a major tourism company in the south owned by the Rich List Davies family.
The family fortune founder is John Davies, based in Queenstown, estimated to be worth about $50 million last year.
The business is now a family affair, with son Mike involved in company operations and accountant daughter Jackie as financial controller of the group,
Trojan Holdings already operates the Milford and Routeburn tracks, the Mt Cook Hermitage, AJ Hackett Bungy and NZSki (Coronet Peak, Remarkables and Mt Hutt ski areas).
Each Speight's Coast to Coast event has about 3500 people directly involved, generating welcome local economic activity and international profile.
