Recession a factor in gilt-edged Parnell art sale
A painting owned by opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is expected to fetch more than $160,000 in an international art auction this month.
A Parnell art house is expecting national and international interest in artwork offered for sale by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
The New Zealand opera singer's 1988 Sir Peter Siddell oil painting of Mt Eden village will be one of 118 lots offered at this month's art work sale of 19th- and 20th-century pieces at the International Art Centre.
Centre director Richard Thomson is expecting the painting to go for up to $165,000.
"Dame Kiri is an art lover and is constantly changing and updating her collection ... like anyone, she only has so much space," he told NBR ONLINE.
"Sir Peter Siddell is a real Auckland painter and is a household name." He died last year aged 76.
Mr Thomson says nearly two years ago his art house sold a Charles Goldie piece for Dame Kiri which still holds the centre's record after being bought for $573,000.
Other works on offer include an oil painting of Karekare Beach by Don Binney, which is expected to be sold for $200,000, and Goldie's Study of Still Life, likely to fetch $160,000.
Mr Thomson says more people are looking to sell their artwork in the current economic climate.
And there are plenty of reasons for people to sell.
"Many paintings come from estates. Others are pulled out of storage where they've been for 50 to 100 years.
"This collection is a bit more outstanding than others in the past."
