Queenstown has clinched a spot on the global Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition board game.
It will be available to play from September and will feature landmark properties and a new form of the game where players race round the board to visit as many locations as possible, collecting passport stamps along the way.
Players will collect cash from visitor fees when opponents land on their locations and the first player to fill their passport wins.
Queenstown was New Zealand’s only nominated destination and competed against 80 cities from around the world vying for a public vote to make it on to the board.
There were about four million votes received from 182 countries.
Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd says it was a great achievement and reflects Queenstown’s international popularity.
He says the new Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition game will be sold millions of times over around the world, each time helping to promote New Zealand.
Getting on the board was based on the number of people who voted online.
Based on the vote, the winning cities that will be featured on the game include Lima, Hong Kong, Riga, Lisbon, Istanbul, Warsaw, Mexico City, Santiago, Belfast, Athens, Belgrade, London, Moscow, Tokyo, New York, Amsterdam, Sydney, Cape Town, Taipei, Giethoorn, and Madrid.
