“I'm still unsure what or how all this has happened."

Tasman businessman Peter Talijanchich (Talley) has become Sir Peter, as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy.

The joint managing director of Talleys Group, Sir Peter has held various roles within the fishing industry including being president of the New Zealand Fishing Industry Association and chairman of the Seafood Industry Policy Council.

His attempts in recent years to get foreign charter vessels placed under the control of New Zealand labour laws was rewarded last August with the passing of the Fisheries Amendment Bill. Sir Peter described the Bill as bringing about an end to “slave labour pay and conditions” in New Zealand waters while generating significant employment.

He was the instigator and a founding trustee of the Seafarers Trust and has supported a range of charities in New Zealand over many decades.

Responding to the news, Sir Peter said in a statement, “I'm still unsure what or how all this has happened. Whilst I'm the lucky and grateful recipient, I guess the honour is much more about recognising what the business and, in particular, a family business has been able to achieve.

“As a family we've been fortunate to work with some really passionate people in some exciting industries and have some fun and success along the way. I'm just proud to be part of that and pleased to see it recognised for all involved, the business and the family,” he said.

Founded in 1936 by Yugoslav immigrant Ivan Talijancich, Talleys Group is operated by two of Ivan’s sons, Peter and Michael Talley, who took over the business in 1964.

Over the past 20 years Peter’s son, Andrew, has become the third generation in the evolving dynasty.
