Will China’s sharemarket meltdown have an effect on New Zealand property? Chris Hutching says it’s hard to ascertain but hotels and accommodation could be the first to feel the heat, while Sally Lindsay doesn’t think commercial property will be hard hit as the big Chinese players have already slowed down their overseas investment.
Prime Minister John Key earlier this year urged first home buyers to look at apartments as a first step on to the property ladder. It seems this might now be in vain as apartment prices in Auckland’s CBD area soar, meaning they are no panacea to housing affordability.
Christchurch residents are waking up to the council’s tagging of LIM reports with warnings of rising flood levels. It is not the first time a council has done this but was successfully fought by Kapiti residents when they launched a judicial review of their council’s actions over climate change.
The government’s recently released $110 billion 30-year infrastructure plan has been strongly criticised by Christchurch property commentator Hugh Paveletich as being “childish.” While the Property Council accepts the report, it says it could have had bolder funding options for the plan to be effective.
