Yet another social housing provider has shunned government plans to privatise Housing New Zealand homes.

Habitat for Humanity pulled out of the process after initially considering proposals to sell state houses in Invercargill.

As with the earlier Salvation Army and the Methodist Mission decisions, the housing provider cites lack of resources and says it would compromise its advocacy role.

Chris Hutching looks at what this many mean for the government policy.

More property companies than ever are going bust in spite of – or because of – the boom in construction work.

Sally Lindsay reports that more than 100 companies in Christchurch have gone under since the earthquakes.

Sea rise based on theoretical projections has real potential to devalue property and affect insurance premiums. Local Government New Zealand wants the government to take the lead and head off the kind of residents’ revolt seen in Christchurch and Kapiti.

It was only a matter of time before the rush of new construction work and elements of “self auditing” led to problems. Auckland Council is cracking down on shoddy work it filmed on videos last week.

Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Adam Feeley has been cleared by the Auditor General over his involvement in his own subdivision at Arrowtown. However the OA did point out that undertaking such private ventures can affect the ability of people in his position to carry out their work effectively.
