Control of Christchurch’s rebuild must return to the local level, retired developer and Demographia co-author Hugh Pavletich says.
He says statutory authorities have underperformed in the rebuild of the city.
Given the size of the city, there should have been more progress, he says.
He has little faith in the new governmental bureaucracies set up to drive the rebuild further.
When it comes to housing provision, Mr Pavletich echoes similar sentiments.
He points to the better performance of Christchurch City’s neighbouring district councils.
Mr Pavletich also warns of Auckland’s residential under-build – by about 13,000 houses a year, he claims.
He hopes media and politicians will use the upcoming local body elections and next year’s national elections as opportunities to raise the debate to a higher level.
