After a 15-year drought, Georgie Pies will be on sale for $4.50 at McDonald's outlets from early June – but only mince and cheese.
Standard pies sold previously for $1 ($1.45 in today's dollars).
McDonald's NZ managing director Patrick Wilson says they have been considering a return since 2009.
"We're committed to ensure it is the product that Kiwis love. From what we've seen so far there is still an apetitte for the brand."
The pies will first be available in Auckland's Queen St and Greenlane outlets and then rolled out to the rest of the country.
Mr Wilson says the investment cost of a Georgie Pie store is $4 million to $5 million so it makes sense to go through the existing McDonald's outlets.
Recipe changed
The original recipe will be used and former Georgie Pie general manager Brian Popham has been consulted on "product research".
McDonald's NZ says the pie will have New Zealand beef and short pastry. A significant change is the removal of contentious food additive MSG.
The pies will be made in the former Georgie Pie factory in Manukau, which its supply partner Goodman Fielder bought from Progressive Enterprises.
