Bacon and ham producer Premium Beehive has bought 2.1ha on Tremaine Ave, Palmerston North as its national distribution centre.

The Wairarapa-based company produces smallgoods under its Beehive, Premier, Primo and Freedom Farms brands.

It paid nearly $5 million for the property, which includes a large cold store building previously owned and operated by Foodstuffs.

Another boost for the Manawatu region is the beginning of a $20 million freight hub on the site of the old Longburn freezing works, 7km south-west of Palmerston North.

The facility is being developed by a joint venture between Ports of Auckland, Port of Napier and cold storage and logistics firm Icepak, which purchased the ex-freezing works property in 2011.

Also on the move is NZ Post, which is transferring all of its lower North Island mail processing operations to 39 Malden St, creating 180 jobs for the region.

The land sales were brokered by Colliers.
