Economically most of the excitement, if that is the word, will be over the latest global dairy trade auction.

The expectation, or rather hope, is that this will show a rise in tumbling milk product prices. However, that was also the expectation, or rather hope, two weeks ago and they fell another 10%.

Other data this week is less headline-ish but important: business cost price changes, otherwise known as the producer prices index and the capital goods index, are released on Wednesday.

These should show how much the fall in the New Zealand dollar has affected business costs.

Today's services sector data shows some benefit flowing through to that area from the drop in the exchange rate.

One of the outstanding features of New Zealand's recent run of economic growth has been strong net immigration, which has been running at record levels. We will have an update on whether that is continuing when the latest migration data is out on Wednesday.

Politically, there will be continued focus on the dairy downturn and Labour's repeated theme the government needs a 'Plan B'.
