Prime Minister John Key says as rank outsiders the All Whites could make him the quickest $10,000 he has ever earned if they win the soccer's World Cup in South Africa.
(And it would certainly put him ahead of the less patriotic punter who dropped $40,000 after betting against the All Whites in their match against Slovakia - Editor.)
Mr Key, who is due to travel to South Africa tomorrow to watch the All Whites play their second World Cup game against Italy early on Monday morning (NZ time), said he would put $5 on the All Whites to bring home the trophy.
After meeting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping in Auckland today, he told reporters being in South Africa for the Italian game would be tremendous.
When asked who his money was on for Monday's game, his answer drew loud laughter from reporters.
"I'm going for a draw. A win would be great and I hope they get there with a win but I am not going to write them off.
"They are a plucky little side with lots of courage but they are up against the world champions so we don't want to under-estimate the fact in front of them.
"But the fact that the Australians want to claim them as their own just shows you how good this team is."
Mr Key fished into his pocket and produced a crumpled $5 note he said would be put on the All Whites at the TAB to win the World Cup.
"They are 2000-l to win the World Cup and it could be the fastest way I have made ten grand."
