New plans from October 1 but Spark proper still not onboard.
And another one's onboard: It's dubious if any household needs it but Orcon is the latest ISP to offer a one gigabit/s UFB fibre plan.
Various retails providers have been offering turbocharged 1 gigabit/s (1000Mbit/s) plans since Chorus said it would expand its one gig wholesale service from "Gigatown" winner Dunedin nationwide from October 1.
Orcon one gig plans are being launched in Hamilton, Tauranga, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch this week
Interestingly, pricing is more expensive in Chorus-controlled areas of the UFB rollout:
UPDATE: Orcon quickly updated that table to smooth out that pricing. See here.
EARLIER: Spark's Bigpipe jumps on the 1 gig UFB bandwagon
Bigpipe is the latest to jump on the 1 gigabit/s UFB fibre bandwagon.
The no-frills, no-call centre ISP, owned by Spark, will offer 1 gig plans nationwide from October 1 or $129 per month naked — that is, the same price as its current fastest fibre plan, which offers 200 Megabit/s in up and down.
Those on the 200/200 plan will be upgraded to 1 gigabit/s (that is 1000 megabit/s) down and 500 megabit/s up free of charge. Data is unlimited.
There is still no word on when Spark proper will offer 1 gig but the company says it's coming soon and it has made an expression-of-interest page live and revealed pricing: $140/month for unlimited data, naked, and $150/month for unlimited data plus a landline.
