OPINION: Why Shearer needs to spill Cunliffe's blood
If today's exercise dissolves into a kiss-and-make-up affair, Mr Shearer may as well give up any chance of running the country.
David Shearer has one opportunity – and one opportunity only – to show his steel as leader of the Labour Party.
Having summoned his caucus to Wellington today to confirm his party leadership Mr Shearer must put the hot poker up challenger David Cunliffe and his ilk.
If he does anything other than banish Mr Cunliffe and his conniving cabal – including the likes of Sue Moroney and Nanaia Mahuta – to the backbench wilderness, Mr Shearer will lose political momentum, not to mention grassroots backing.
If today’s exercise dissolves into a kiss-and-make-up affair, Mr Shearer may as well give up any chance of running the country.
If he is serious about leading his party to victory in 2014 – and that is looking less likely with every poll that passes – Mr Shearer needs to act now.
Labour politics reeks of the blood of “pick me, pick me” leadership wanna-be's.
If Mr Shearer means business, Mr Cunliffe needs to taste the axe.
