Tenants in a new development called Main Beach Takapuna have opened for business in recent weeks.
The development is by Copson Group, owned by NBR Rich Lister John Copson who is listed as having a fortune of $300 million.
Residents will be able to walk to Main Beach via a walkway from nearby Takapuna Beach Centre.
The land was formerly a car park and is now home to Barworks, which has taken two of the tenancies with its bistro Franc’s, and restaurant Regatta.
Tokyo Club’s Mark Smith has introduced Japanese cuisine in the centre of Main Beach.
The one hectare block on Takapuna Beach is bordered by the Strand, Hurstmere Rd and the Copson Group Business Centre.
It was bought by the Copson Group in 2009.
The property was designed as a restaurant pavilion by Auckland-based architects the Ignite Group.
The architecture was inspired by the local black-stained Vernon Brown beach houses and boat houses.
Ignite’s managing director Jeremy Whelan says the aim of the project was to integrate Hurstmere Rd with Takapuna.
Copson Group chief executive says the vision was to turn Takapuna around to face the beach and make it a destination for Aucklanders.
