Backgrounded by the themes: Glory, Passion, Heart, Colour and Revolution, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will be presenting a range of concerts which makes use of extensive symphonic forces the orchestra has at its disposal.
It will be playing some of the great symphonies such as Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and Mahler’s 6th along with Bach’s Air on G String and Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music.
The orchestra will visit 24 centres during 2011, from Auckland to Balclutha, Wanganui to Wanaka, Tauranga to Gore. Next year Auckland will get to have a couple of extra concerts - one for the Auckland Arts Festival and one performance at Manukau City (or rather the southern part of the greater Auckland City).
Wellingtonians will get 20 concerts bulked out by a series of four Brahms concerts (October 12 - 15) The Brahmissimo series will include his four symphonies as well as two piano concertos, a violin concerto and Double Concerto.
With one of its concerts titled Romeo and Juliet it has included three compositions based on the Shakespearean couple – Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, excerpts from the Berlioz symphonic work Romeo and Juliet.
In October 2011 New Zealand’s own megastar of classical song, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, returns with a gala concert.
To coincide with the Rugby World Cup the orchestra will be playing the Beethoven Ninth Symphony with some of New Zealand’s greatest singing talent - soloists Madeleine Pierard, Wendy Dawn Thompson, Simon O’Neill and Jonathan Lemalu.
There will also be a major concert in October at the Vector Arena in Auckland with Dame Kiri te Kanawa. This could be one of her last performances in New Zealand. Hopefully it will be a memorable one although in previous outings she has not displayed her talents to the full.
Included in the other great works the orchestra will play Mahler's Symphony No4, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4, Dvorjak Symphony No 9 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No7.
The orchestra’s 2010 season is not yet over and next month it departs on the most extensive and prestigious international tour of its 63-year history.
By invitation only, the orchestra will perform in the greatest halls of Europe including the hallowed Musikverein in Vienna, which represents the pinnacle for any international orchestra.
The NZSO will be touring from late October through to mid November, starting in Shanghai at the World Expo Concert and finishing in Hamburg.
