NZ Post to cut 500 jobs

Managerial and specialist roles at head office and support roles to be cut.

New Zealand Post is proposing to cut at least 500 jobs by July.

A spokeswoman for the state-owned company says the affected jobs will mainly be managerial and specialist roles at head office and support roles. The roles are mainly in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

“Changes at New Zealand Post have been widely signalled,” the spokeswoman says.

“This process forms the second phase of New Zealand Post’s five-year transformation plan, and follows a number of significant changes that have been made to frontline teams, including processing optimisation, alternate day delivery and integration of the New Zealand Post and Courier businesses.”

The 500 proposed job cuts form part of the 1500-2000 roles indicated in late 2013 when the five-year plan was announced.

“The process is part of our changes as we redefine ourselves for the future – in response to an annual $20-30 million fall in revenue as people send 60 million fewer letters every year,” the spokeswoman says.

The change will remove layers of management, allowing NZ Post to be more nimble, give power to regional and local teams, and remove duplication, the spokeswoman says.

“New Zealand Post will continue to deliver mail but, increasingly the future is in parcels, as online shopping continues to grow.”

NZ Post recently announced price changes to its postage rates, broadly increasing them, pointing out the decline of snail mail has impacted revenue despite cost reductions.

The company declined to comment further, saying that is not appropriate while it is in talks with staff.

NZ Post Group lifted first-half profit 10%, largely due to one-off gains from selling assets and Kiwibank cashflow.
