A New Zealand horse has won the Melbourne Cup – ridden by the first female jockey to win the prestigious race.
The 3200 metre race, at 5pm NZ time, was won by Prince of Penzance, bred in Matamata by Rich Hill Stud and ridden by Michelle Payne.
She was the only female jockey in the Cup. New Zealander Maree Lyndon was the first woman to ride in 1987, coming in second last on Argonaut Style.
Ms Payne knew Prince of Penzance well, having ridden him in all bar one of its 23 race starts.
The horse, trained by Darren Weir, was an 80 to 1 outsider at a $61 chance, but shot to the finish line in the dramatic last seconds.
He beat English stayer Max Dynamite, with Criterion – also NZ bred and owed by Sir Owen Glenn – finishing in third place.
Twenty four horses competed in the 155th running of the $A6 million Cup, in front of a massive crowd at Flemington racecourse.
